Constraints on anaphor movement

چکیده
2. Fronting pattern follows from three ranked, violable constraints: Antecedent: An anaphor has an accessible antecedent, i.e. an anaphor has an antecedent and the anaphor does not precede and c-command its antecedent (Hankamer and Sag, 1976). >> TopFirst: Topic is clause initial, i.e. if a syntactic constituent is topic it is clause initial (= in Spec-CP; cf. Costa 2001:176). >> SubjFirst: Subject is clause initial (= in Spec-CP).

The time-course of the application of binding constraints in reference resolution
We report two experiments which examined the role of binding theory in on-line sentence processing. Participants eye movements were recorded while they read short texts which included anaphoric references with reflexive anaphors (himself or herself). In each of the experiments, two characters were introduced into the discourse before the anaphor, and only one of these characters was a grammatic...
متن کاملAnaphor Resolution and the Scope of Syntactic Constraints
An anal)hor resolution algorithm is presented which relies on a combination of strategies for narrowing down and selecting ti'om antecedent sets fl)r reflexive pronouns, nonreflexive pronom~s, and common 11011118. ~lqle work focuses on syntactic restrictions which are derived froin Chomsky's Binding Theory. It is discussed how these constraints can be incorporated adequately in an anaphor resol...
متن کاملA High-Performance Coreference Resolution System using a Constraint-based Multi-Agent Strategy
This paper presents a constraint-based multiagent strategy to coreference resolution of general noun phrases in unrestricted English text. For a given anaphor and all the preceding referring expressions as the antecedent candidates, a common constraint agent is first presented to filter out invalid antecedent candidates using various kinds of general knowledge. Then, according to the type of th...
متن کاملContextually Appropriate Reference Generation
We describe a system for contextually appropriate anaphor and pronoun generation for Turkish. It uses Binding Theory and Centering Theory to model local and nonlocal reference. We describe the rules for Turkish, and their computational treatment. A cascaded method for anaphor and pronoun generation is proposed for handling pro-drop and discourse constraints on pronominalization. The system has ...
